Catastrophic Injury
Catastrophic injury refers to extremely severe injury that has tremendous impact on a person’s life, often resulting in a permanent condition requiring extensive medical treatment and long-term care. There are of course many types of catastrophic injuries, but some of the more well known examples include:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Amputation
- Paralysis
- Paraplegia
- Quadriplegia
- Broken back
|
- Cerebral Palsy
- Birth injury
- Severe burns
- Coma
- Neck injuries
- Multiple fractures
- Fractured skull

While some persons suffering from a catastrophic injury may recover if given immediate medical attention and treatment, for certain severe injuries, such as spinal cord injuries or cerebral palsy, recovery is rare. Many catastrophic injury victims only partially recover, and many never recover at all. It's not uncommon for someone undergoing a catastrophic injury to suffer a shortened life span, because often a number of bodily systems are debilitated by the injury.
The extraordinary cost of medical rehabilitation, assistive care, and ongoing medical management can be very burdensome. Accurately estimating the extent of injury damage as well as future medical and assistive care requires competent medical and legal evaluation. Many factors need to be considered, including structural modifications to the home, transportation facilities to adjust for a wheelchair, necessary medical devices, and other arrangements related to the victim's physical care. Physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals are often hired to assist if rehabilitation is possible.
Sometimes litigation is the only recourse to dealing with the financial demands brought about by catastrophic injury. At Norrid & Robertson, our resources of medical experts and other professionals help us evaluate a client's case and decide the best course of action toward obtaining the maximum compensation entitled by law.
Putting the burden of responsibility on the parties at fault not only brings justice and vital assistance for recovery or long term care, but also serves to correct hazardous conditions so other people do not have to suffer through similar tragedies.
